I’m sure I knew this and probably have noticed it before,
but today as I prayed through the Psalms (1, 31, 61, 91, 121) I recognized that
each of them affirms finding shelter and refuge with God. The image of refuge under God’s
wings shows up in 61:4 and 91:4. This is a definitely maternal, feminine image
as for most birds (but maybe not all species, I'm not an ornithology expert), the chicks take refuge under the
mother’s wings. And in these Psalms, that is an image of great strength, on
which I am focusing for my centering prayer today.
